Who We Are

Waterwatch UK is a community driven organisation dedicated to improving water quality and ensuring transparency across the UK. We believe everyone has the right to know what’s in the water they swim, paddle, sail, and play in and we’re here to make that information accessible, clear, and accurate.

Our organisation was born out of a series of meetings that I co led with Anna Firth, former MP for Southend West and Leigh, alongside water company executives and environmental groups. Waterwatch UK was established to hold not only water companies but all parties accountable for their role in water pollution. We connect diverse stakeholders, residents, businesses, environmentalists, local authorities, regulatory bodies like the Environment Agency, MPs, the agricultural sector, and water companies, ensuring that water management decisions reflect the needs of the people most impacted.

Our Mission

At our core, Waterwatch UK strives to make the water sector more transparent and responsive to the communities it serves. We provide platforms for individuals and local groups to engage directly with water companies, regulators, and other stakeholders, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed.

Through initiatives like Water Summits, where local voices meet decision-makers, and committees which hold all stakeholders accountable, we aim to eliminate water pollution and make every UK waterway safe for swimming and recreation.

Funding and Independence

Transparency isn’t just about water quality, it’s how we operate too. Waterwatch UK will be funded through a diverse range of contributors, including local businesses, environmental groups, and government bodies, with match funding from Anglian Water. This balanced funding model ensures our independence while encouraging all parties to be part of the solution.

Our work isn’t limited to holding water companies accountable. We also scrutinise local authorities, Ofwat, the Environment Agency, ECAS, MPs, the government, the agricultural sector, and any other entities contributing to water pollution. These groups recognise the need for accountability not just from regulators, but also from independent organisations representing the communities they impact.

By supporting Waterwatch UK, these stakeholders demonstrate a commitment to addressing the root causes of pollution and working collaboratively toward long-term solutions.

Our Commitment

Waterwatch UK provides independent oversight to ensure water companies, local stakeholders, and regulators collaborate effectively to achieve real, measurable outcomes. As we continue to grow, our unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and community driven change remains at the heart of everything we do. Together, we’re working toward a future where our waterways are clean, safe, and protected for generations to come.

The Origins and Evolution of the Southend Water Summits

By Daniella | 31/01/2025

Statement on Southend MPs Voting Against Amendment 16 to the Water Bill

By Daniella | 29/01/2025

Reading Time: < 1 minuteWe are deeply disappointed that both of Southend’s MPs, David Burton-Sampson and Bayo Alaba, chose to vote against Amendment 16 to the Water (Special Measures) Bill. This amendment would have ensured that fines imposed on water companies for pollution were reinvested directly into improving water quality, rather than allowing companies to pass the cost onto…
